If you’ve got a construction truck loving little one, you’ve got to try making this construction-themed sensory bin. It’s the perfect combo of hands-on fun and imaginative small world play! Plus, it’s super easy to throw together with just a few items you probably already have or can snag on your next Amazon or Target run.
This rock quarry construction sensory bin is a go-to activity for keeping little hands busy and imaginations working. We’re talking mini construction trucks, dried beans, rocks, wooden blocks, and colorful wooden loose parts. Yes, it’s as fun as it sounds!
The dried bean base is perfect if your looking for a less-messy sensory play experience. It’s easy to contain, simple to scoop up, and doesn’t leave behind residue like sand or slime. Plus, the smooth, cool texture of the beans offers a satisfying tactile experience that kids love to run their fingers through, pour, and scoop!
Why Construction Sensory Play Is Awesome
There’s just something exciting about construction play, isn’t there? It gives kids the chance to dig, scoop, sort, and build while also working on fine motor skills, creativity, and focus.
Construction-themed sensory bins are a sneaky way to engage kids in learning while they think they’re just having fun. Plus, they’re a lifesaver when you need a few quiet minutes to prep dinner or finish your coffee before it gets cold (again!).
How to Create a Rock Quarry Construction Sensory Bin

What You’ll Need
Here’s everything we used to make our construction sensory bin. We got most things from Amazon, but Target’s Dollar Spot or your local Dollar Store are great places to find construction-themed sensory bin fillers and toys.
- Dried Black Beans and Chickpeas (any type of dried beans will work!): Checkout our post how to dye chickpeas to make them a fun color!
- Mini Construction Trucks: Bulldozers, dump trucks, and excavators are a must!
- Small Rocks or Pebbles: For realistic digging and loading.
- Rock-Style Building Blocks: Great for stacking.
- Craft Sticks: Use as pretend planks, barriers, or roads.
- Colorful Wooden Loose Parts: For extra sorting fun or imaginative “building materials.”
- Silicone Cupcake Liners or Small Bowls
- Scoops and Funnel or Tongs and Tweezers
- Sensory Bin (or any container big enough for your child to play in)
Pro Tip: This sensory bin uses dried beans as the filler. But if you don’t have any dried beans or want to switch it up, other sensory bin fillers like kinetic sand, edible dirt, taste-safe kinetic sand, moon dough, dyed rice, cloud dough or even edible play dough work great too! Instructions
1. Start with the base
Pour your dried black beans and chickpeas into a sensory bin or shallow plastic tub. Spread them out evenly to create a gravel-like look for your little builder to dig into.
2. Add in the Contruction Trucks and Rocks
Place your mini construction trucks around the bin, along with rocks and building blocks. Arrange them like a tiny job site ready for action!
3. Add in Trinkets, and Toys
Scatter in your colorful loose parts, craft sticks, and other accessories to spark creativity and extend play. These can become “raods” “lights,” or “cones” in their imaginative construction world.
4. Introduce Scoops, Tongs, Tweezers, and bowls
Add some scoops, tongs, tweezers, and small bowls for scooping, transporting, and sorting. This not only adds fun but gives their fine motor skills a little workout.
5. Time To Play
Let your little one dig, haul, and build in their very own mini construction site!

Creative Play Ideas for Your Rock Quarry Construction Sensory Bin
1. Building and Stacking
Use rocks, blocks, and craft sticks to build little towers, roads, or bridges. Let your child experiment with balance and design as they create their own mini structures.
2. Load and Haul
Use the mini trucks to load rocks or beans and haul them across the bin. Create a delivery line from one side to the other!
3. Construction Site Sorting
Bury the gems, pom-poms, or othe trinkets in the dried chickpeas and challenge your kids to find and sort them all! They can dig with their construction trucks, fingers, or scoops and tongs.
4. Book Pairing Fun
Pair your sensory play with a fun construction-themed book! We love:

- Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site
- Construction Site: Road Crew, Coming Through!

Safety When Playing with Sensory Bins
Sensory bins are amazing, but it’s always good to keep a few safety tips in mind:
- Supervise younger kids. If you have toddlers or young children playing with the bin, always keep an eye on them to make sure they’re not putting any small objects in their mouths. Choking hazards are a real concern, so be mindful of the size of the objects you include.
- Watch out for sharp or fragile items. Avoid anything that could potentially break or shatter in the bin. Stick to soft or flexible items like plastic figures, pom-poms, and silicone or plastic scoops.
- Keep it clean. Sensory bins can get messy! Lay down a sheet or tablecloth underneath to catch any runaway beans or small pieces. This makes cleanup a breeze.
