Erupting Pumpkin Volcano Recipe

Create an erupting pumpkin volcano for a fun fall activity! This hands-on sensory activity blends science, creativity, and messy fun!

Equipment

  • Sensory bin or baking dish
  • Measuring Cups
  • Measuring Spoons

Materials

  • 1 small pumpkin  hollowed-out
  • ¼ – ½ cup baking soda
  • 1 tsp dish soap optional
  • Food coloring optional
  • ~1 cup vinegar

Instructions

  • Cut a small round opening at the top of a small pumpkin and scoop out the insides. Place the hollowed-out pumpkin in a sensory bin or on a large dish.
  • Add ¼ to ½ cup of baking soda directly into the pumpkin.
  • Add about 1 teaspoon of dish soap.
  • Add several drops of food coloring.
  • Pour in approximately 1 cup of vinegar and watch the foamy eruption bubble up and overflow!
  • Repeat the eruption by adding more baking soda and vinegar as many times as you like.
