Erupting Lemon Volcano Recipe

Make a colorful Erupting Lemon Volcanoes! The perfect mix of fun, learning, and sensory play all in one!

Equipment

  • Sensory bin or baking dish
  • Measuring Cups
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Cutting board
  • Knife

Materials

  • 1 Lemon
  • ~1 tbsp Baking soda
  • Food coloring
  • tsp Dish soap
  • Craft sticks or popsicle sticks

Instructions

  • Roll the lemon on the countertop with firm pressure to release juice.
  • Cut the lemon in half. Trim the bottom so it sits flat on your tray or dish.
  • Juice the unused half and save it to refresh the reaction later (or use store-bought lemon juice or vinegar).
  • Use a craft stick to poke and mash the exposed lemon flesh to release more juice.
  • Add food coloring onto the lemon’s surface. Use one color or mix for a rainbow effect.
  • Drizzle a little dish soap on top for extra foamy bubbles.
  • Sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of baking soda onto the lemon. Use the craft stick to mix the baking soda into the lemon juice. Watch the colorful, bubbly eruption!
  • When fizzing slows, add more baking soda and extra lemon juice (or vinegar) to restart the eruption.

Notes

Instructions are per lemon half. Each lemon half becomes its own mini volcano. If you want to make multiple volcanoes, simply repeat these steps for each lemon half you prepare.
