Supplies You’ll Need

Getting started with a Halloween Jello Sensory Bin is easy, and most of the items you’ll need can be picked up on a budget from the Target Dollar Spot, local Dollar Store or Amazon. Here’s what you’ll want to gather:

  • Sensory bin or large shallow tray: A large plastic bin (or any container big enough for your child to play in), or even a large casserole dish works great! This sensory bin storage lid is my favorite!
  • Jell-O: You can go with classic Halloween colors like orange and green (I used 2 boxes for our bin). Want to skip the sugar? Clear gelatin with food coloring works just as well and is less sticky! Be sure to check out our blog post Jello Blocks for Sensory Play for our gelatin recipe and step-by-step instructions.
  • Plastic Halloween trinkets: Think creepy-crawlies like spiders, worms, erasers, skeletons, vampire teeth, monster fingers, googly eyes, and more. (Target’s Dollar Spot or your local Dollar store are great places to find a variety of inexpensive Halloween toys)
  • Mini bowls, mason jars, cauldrons or Jack O’ Lanterns: Perfect for scooping, pouring, and creating spooky “potions.”
  • Kids’ tongs, tweezers and scoops: These will not only help keep the mess slightly under control but also encourage fine motor skills. These scoops and tongs are my favorite!

How To Set It Up

1. Fill the Bin

The night before you plan to do the activity, prepare your Jello. Follow the instructions on the package, but if you want the Jello to be a bit firmer for easier digging, reduce the amount of water.

If you’re using unflavored gelatin, feel free to add a few drops of orange, green, or even purple food coloring to give it that spooky Halloween look.

2. Add Halloween Toys

While the Jello is still liquid, drop in all your Halloween trinkets (make sure to wash the toys with warm, soapy water beforehand). This is where the fun really starts!

Some toys will sink to the bottom while others float on top—perfect for a spooky sensory dig! Picture the kids squishing through gooey Jello to rescue spiders, skeletons, pumpkins, and worms.

Let the Jello set overnight in the fridge, giving it plenty of time to firm up.

3. Add Scoops, Tweezers, Bowls, and Jars

Add in some scoops, tweezers, bowls, and jars to give the kids even more ways to play! They can scoop up the Jello and transfer the Halloween toys between containers, all while working on those fine motor skills in a fun and engaging way.

4. Time to Play!

Here’s where the magic happens. When the kids gather around the bin, give them a few minutes to explore with their eyes first. Some children might be hesitant at first – the cold, squishy Jello might seem a little “yucky” to them. And that’s totally fine!

Let them ease into the sensory experience at their own pace. Give them tweezers to start picking out a spider or two, or encourage them to dip their fingers into the gooey mess to find those hidden treasures.

Creative Play Ideas for Your Halloween Jello Sensory Bin

Once the kids have dived into the Halloween Jello sensory bin, you can keep the fun going by encouraging some creative play! Here are a few simple ideas that will turn their squishy, spooky sensory experience into even more imaginative adventures:

1. Rescue Mission

This is a great one for little adventurers! Bury the Halloween trinkets deep inside the Jello and challenge the kids to go on a rescue mission to save the trapped spiders, skeletons, pumpkins, and worms. Use tweezers, tongs, or scoops to “rescue” each toy from the sticky, gooey Jello.

2. Potion-Making Magic

Let your kids pretend they’re witches or wizards creating magical potions! Provide small containers, like mini cauldrons, bowls or jars, and encourage them to scoop up the Jello. Add a little water or glitter for extra “magic.” They can mix ingredients like spiders, pumpkins, and skeletons into their concoctions and make up spooky spells to go along with it.

3. Spooky Soup Kitchen

Turn the sensory bin into a spooky soup-making station where the kids can “cook” up different recipes like “spider soup” or “witches brew”. Provide spoons, ladles, and jars or mini bowls so they can stir up different combinations of Jello and other Halloween toys. They can serve their spooky soup to you or each other!

4. Creepy Crawlies Guessing Game

Turn the sensory bin into a sensory guessing game! Blindfold the kids and have them feel around the bin to pull out a Halloween toy. Once they have it in hand, they’ll have to guess what it is just by touch. Is it a slimy spider, a spooky skeleton, or a wiggly worm? For extra fun, have them describe what they’re feeling with lots of spooky adjectives like “slippery,” “squishy,” or “gross!”

5. Monster Smash

Let the kids pretend they’re monsters smashing through the Jello to find their hidden treasures! They can use their hands, scoops, or even wear monster fingers to dig through the bin. Let children freely explore the texture of the Jello and Halloween creatures, promoting sensory exploration and tactile awareness.

Top Tips for Halloween Jello Sensory Fun

  • Let them explore at their own pace: When introducing something messy like Jello, it’s important not to rush the kids into playing if they’re unsure at first. Some kids might feel a bit uncomfortable with the slimy texture, especially if they have sensory sensitivities or sensory processing disorder. Give them some time to get familiar with the bin and maybe even start with tools like scoops or tweezers before using their hands. Once they’re ready, they’ll be diving in and having a blast!
  • Add new toys gradually: As the kids start to lose interest, you can introduce new elements like a set of toy syringes, eye droppers or even monster fingers that they can wear while digging through the bin. Trust me, this will revive their excitement and keep the fun going for longer. Plus, it allows them to shift gears in their play, keeping things fresh and engaging!
  • Embrace the mess: Okay, I won’t lie – this is going to get messy! But hey, that’s all part of the fun. The Jello might end up on their clothes, the floor, or even in their hair. And that’s okay! I always set our Jello bin up in a space where mess is welcome – like outside or on a large tray indoors. If you can, place a tablecloth or a play mat underneath to catch any spills.

Why Sensory Play Is Amazing for Kids

Now, aside from the obvious fun factor, sensory play offers huge developmental benefits for kids. A Halloween Jello Sensory Bin is more than just a messy activity – it helps kids work on key skills:

  • Fine motor skills: Using tweezers, scooping, and pinching toys out of the Jello builds those tiny hand muscles they need for writing and other fine motor tasks.
  • Sensory exploration: For kids who are sensitive to different textures, this gives them a safe space to explore something slimy and squishy at their own pace. And because Jello is edible, it’s safe for even the smallest kids.
  • Imagination and creativity: Watch as your kiddos start inventing little stories with the spooky toys. My kids love creating potions, squishing the Jello to make “magic sounds,” or pretending they’re rescuing spiders from a sticky situation.
  • Social skills and communication: If you’ve got multiple kids playing together, this activity encourages them to take turns, share tools, and communicate as they play.
