If you’ve never experienced the squishy, moldable magic of Floam Slime, you’re in for a treat! This unique sensory play material is like a mashup of slime and modeling clay, with tiny polystyrene beads giving it a fun, textured feel.
I’ve purchased Floam from Amazon before, but decided to try making it at home. Spoiler alert: It’s super easy, ridiculously fun, way cheaper than store-bought options, and a fantastic way to sneak a little learning into playtime!
Why Floam Slime is Awesome for Sensory Play
Floam Slime is the perfect sensory material for kids. It’s squishy, stretchy, and moldable, making it a tactile wonderland for little hands. The squish of the slime combined with the texture of tiny beads makes it an engaging activity for kids of all ages.
It’s perfect for improving fine motor skills, calming antsy hands, and even creating lasting sculptures if you let it dry. Plus, making it at home gives you total control over the texture, color, and consistency, which means you can tailor it to your child’s sensory preferences.
How To Make Floam Slime

What You’ll Need
Here’s what you’ll need to whip up your own Floam Slime:
- 2 tsp Borax powder
- 1/4 cup Elmer’s white school glue
- 1/2 to 1 cups polystyrene beads or microfoam beads
- 1/2 and 1/4 cup warm water (divided)
- Food coloring (optional)
How to Make Floam Slime
1. Prepare the Borax Solution
In a small bowl, mix 2 teaspoons of Borax powder with 1/2 cup of warm water. Stir until the Borax dissolves completely.

2. Mix the Glue Solution
In another bowl, combine 1/4 cup white glue with 1/4 cup warm water. If you want colorful Floam Slime, add a few drops of food coloring to the glue mixture.

3. Combine Ingredients
Add the polystyrene beads to the glue mixture.

4. Add Borax Solution
Add 1–3 tablespoons of the Borax solution, depending on the consistency you want (less for stretchier Floam, more for firmer Floam). Use 1 tablespoon of the borax solution for a very fluid Floam, 2 tablespoons for average Floam, and 3 tablespoons for stiff Floam.

5. Mix and Knead
Mix until the ingredients are well combined. When it becomes too stiff to mix with a spoon, knead with your hands. The Floam Slime will come together quickly! If it’s too sticky adjust by adding a little more Borax solution. If it’s too watery, adjust by adding some more beads.

6. Play and Enjoy!
Let the kids squeeze, mold, and sculpt to their hearts’ content.

Tips for the Best Floam Slime Ever
- Consistency is Key: The consistency of your Floam is going to depend on much of the borax mixture you add in. For a firmer Floam you will want to use more borax. I would suggest starting out with less and slowly adding more until you find a consistency that you like. Too much can make your Floam Slime stiff!
- Storage: Floam Slime can be stored in an air tight container for endless play, or kids can leave their creations out to dry. Keep your Floam in an airtight container or sealed bag to prevent it from drying out. If you want permanent creations, let it air-dry into a solid form.
- Bead Options: For your Floam Slime filler, polystyrene beads can be found in most craft stores for an affordable price. If you cannot find them they are available for purchase on Amazon or you could try breaking up any Styrofoam cups or packing materials you have on hand.
